S A J

Sarah Anne Johnson's artwork is so lovely, it gives me that warm, fuzzy feeling of remembered childhood. She is a Canadian artist who graduated from Yale in 2004 and has had three exhibitions since. She says her art's key elements are 'adventure, spritual fulfilment and giving back to Nature,' but I think it depicts a key fourth element: community. Her second exhibition was the product of her working for three years in Manitoba helping with reforestation and during the time she made many friends. She spent much of the third year photographing them and what can be seen in them is the strong bonds that are often formed between people particiapating in hard physical labour together. I think this sense of camaradie and belonging that translates into her work is what I like best about her pieces.
